0-6-0ST Austerity Departing Darley Dale

Peak Rail is a standard Gauge Heritage Steam Railway running from Matlock to Rowsley South Via Darley Dale, through Derbyshire Dales. A distance of 4 miles.

Route

The route totals up a round trip of eight miles though the Derbyshire Scenery.

Rowsley South

Rowsley South is the Northern Terminus of the line and the Railways Headquarters.

This station has ample free Car parking. In 2009  new station building was constructed, this houses Toilet facilities, Booking Office, Station Masters Office and Exhibit showing how the Peak Rail volunteers brought the line back to life.

Recently, the Railway has also reinstated the Turntable to it’s original site and constructed a new Steam MPD and workshop facility’s.

There is the Station Buffet here too, Which serves hot and cold refreshments, and Quote: “Do excellent Bacon Butties!”

Also situated in the yard is the Derbyshire Dales Narrow Gauge Railway which is located next to the Picnic Area.

Darley Dale

Heading south, we come to the Halfway point at Darley Dale. Here is the main stock storage area on line, with lots of sidings containing stock in various stages of restoration.

Here you can Break your journey and visit the Museum located on the Up Platform. The Museum depicts the History of the Matlock – Rowsley Branch until it’s closure in 1967.

During busy days, Trains also pass here!

Matlock Riverside

This is the Southern Terminus of the line. There is a Temporary platform here, but no facility’s.

You can take a footpath to the Town Centre. This Footpath follows the River Bank.

There is Car Parking here in the form of a Council Pay & Display Car Park.

Other Attractions

As already mentioned, at Rowsley South there is the Derbyshire Dales Narrow Gauge Railway. This 2ft Gauge line has a fine collection of Narrow Gauge Industrial locomotives.

The ride is only short, but still a great little side attraction.
