Weymouth Quay Railway
The Weymouth Quay Railway was a branch off the Main station at Weymouth, that ran alongside the Harbour to the Pleasure Pier, where passengers would transfer from Train to Ferry Boat to the Channel Islands.
The line was used for freight too, with numerous Sidings along the 1 mile route.
The original Station and buildings still remain although now used as offices for Condor Ferries.
The whole line is still intact, a bit overgrown near the Mainline, but still able to carry trains one would think, some of the sidings have had Tarmac laid over them, but trains can still run right to the end of the line.
There are now plans to permanently close the line, although the last train ran over the line in 1999, a special charter, the line is not officially closed.
Weymouth & Portland Borough Council are now looking to buy the line from Network Rail, and Tarmac over whole route.
Enthusiasts are trying to save the line, with certain proposals. I think it would be nice to see Steam return to the line, as some sort of Steam preservation line, like the Bristol Harbour Railway.
One of the Proposals was to reopen the line and run trains the full length of the line to take spectators of the 2012 Olympics to the Quay to observe the Sailing.
Sadly this is not looking to hopeful!
